RETREAT JOURNAL

How to choose your first yoga retreat

You may know you want some time away before you know what kind of retreat would suit you. A beautiful photograph can start the idea. The daily rhythm, teaching and people are what help you decide.

Begin with what you want more time for

What would you like the time to understand more deeply? It might be the way your body moves, the effects of breath and stillness, or how food and daily rituals can nourish you. You might be at a turning point in life, or ready to give your practice the attention a weekly class cannot hold. You do not need a perfect answer. One honest reason for coming is enough to begin comparing the options.

Look for a programme that explains what you will actually do. Words such as restorative or active can mean different things to different people, so read the example day and ask questions about the sessions.

Look at the whole day

A retreat includes the hours between practices. Notice when meals happen, how much free time there is and whether outings are included. Immersive practice and time to unwind belong together. Look for a rhythm that gives you room to absorb the teaching, ask questions and explore the place you are staying.

Choose how you want to share the experience

Coming on your own does not mean you have to share a bedroom. You might enjoy a shared place, prefer a private room or come with someone you know. Think about what helps you rest, as well as your budget.

Shared meals and practice give you time to meet people without every hour needing to be a group activity. Some of our guests meet on retreat and still get together for a cuppa at the studio. There is room for quiet time as well as company.

Ask about experience and suitability

You do not need to perform an ideal version of yourself to go on retreat. You do need a programme that suits your current practice and circumstances. Tell the hosts what you have tried, what interests you and anything you need to discuss before booking. A useful conversation is more reassuring than a broad promise that every retreat suits everyone.

Check the practical details before comparing prices

Look at the number of nights, whether a price is per person or per room, meals, transfers and activities. Then add flights, insurance and personal spending where these are separate. Read the deposit, balance and cancellation terms before paying.
